Medicare agrees to cover TMS treatment for depression in TN, GA, AL [1]
The Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation treatment for those suffering with depression will be covered by Medicare in Tennessee and two other Southern states effective Dec. 1, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Studies [2], the governmental agency that administers all things Medicare, and one local Nashville-based psychiatrist.
“TMS will now be available to more patients, giving them the hope of living a life free of depression,” said Burton Hills-based Dr. Scott West, who was the first local psychiatrist to acquire the TMS machine, a space-age contraption that looks similar to a dentist’s chair. West has been using TMS to treat patients since 2010. (See our September magazine story here [3].)
Further, CMS has granted the same approval for Medicare coverage in Georgia and Alabama including the same Dec. 1 effective date. TMS is FDA-approved for therapy for the treatment of depressed patients who do not receive adequate benefit from prior treatments.
